Formality and axial design in the vegetable garden.
The Espaliery lies at the beginning of The Long Axis, an axial vista that passes through this garden and links four of the House Gardens. The axis is marked here by the arrow and runs north west.
The Espaliery is bordered by twenty-one espaliered fruit trees and is divided into four quadrants, each quadrant in turning being divided in four. At the corner of each quadrant is a clipped cumquat and at the centre of each quadrant is a birdbath. Seasonal vegetable crops are rotated around the quadrants each year, with some quadrants being permanently occupied by perennial crops such as asparagus, rhubarb and horse radish.
Marking the centre of the four quadrants is a sundial, shown here by the yellow circle. The sundial is a reminder that The Long Axis was laid out to correspond to the movements of the sun throughout the year. For more detailed information on "The Long Axis" go to this page.
