The grounds of The Caretaker's Cottage provide privacy. And nuts.
The Nuttery is a world unto itself, nestled at the head of its own secluded valley on the far side of The Horse Paddock and featuring plantings of hazelnuts, pecans, walnuts and chestnuts.
Since the early days of European settlement in the nineteenth century there has always been some form of dwelling providing additional accommodation in this portion of The Drip. We aim to continue and indeed develop this historical tradition into the twenty first century. The Caretaker's Cottage sits within The Nuttery and is independent from the rest of the property, with its own private vehicular access, water supply, telecommunications and off-grid energy supply
Additional privacy is achieved by hedging which is becoming the major design feature of The Nuttery. An edible hedgerow along The Drip Lane comprising a massed planting of coppiced hazelnuts plus an ever expanding assortment of unusual, hard to find fruits and berries is an intriguing and increasingly productive feature of this area of The Property, providing forage in all seasons.

A Note from the Library
Andy Goldsworthy is regarded as one of the greatest sculptors of his generation and the ever-expanding Goldsworthy section in our library is a never-ending source of delight and inspiration.
In 2003 Goldsworthy installed "Treeline", a row of close planted aspens that will in time form a cage like screen alongside a public road that leads through a private property. This work has now become the inspiration for the hazelnut hedge in The Nuttery which will form a screen along The Drip Lane. |
