Traditional fruit trees and a host of golden daffodils.
The Old Orchard was established by the Blackman family in the nineteenth century. Few trees from these original plantings remain, the most notable being an old Chestnut tree and several hazelnuts which were mentioned here last week.
When Clive and Michael purchased the property in 1992 the orchard was suffering from many years of neglect, trees had been left unpruned and productivity and quality was low. Many trees have been replaced with varieties similar to those originally planted, mainly traditional stone fruits and apples.
The trees are underplanted by many varieties of daffodils. These emerge in late autumn and commence flowering in midwinter, continuiong through to early spring. It is essential, that the plants are left to die back meaning that that the entire orchard cannot be mown until early summer. Paths between the daffodils are mown to provide access to the fruit trees during this time
